Transition and Support

Moving into the Sixth Form marks a transition and brings with it a changed status and acknowledgement that each student is now a young adult within our Academy and the wider community.  At the Academy, each student benefits from one to one tuition with their individual tutor.

One-to-one tuition:

Students are assigned to a tutor group and meet their tutor at the end of the day for 40 minutes. This time is used for PSHRE, discussion on Current Affairs with debates, Careers advice and a weekly assembly.

Students meet with tutors to regularly discuss academic progress, attendance and punctuality, and progression routes upon completion of their studies. By working in this way the tutor supports students to progress academically and to maintain the motivation and commitment that is needed for excellence.  The tutor also assists students in developing Sixth Form study skills, preparing them for the transition onto university or the world of work.

At the beginning of Year 12, students learn about the vast array of undergraduate courses available to them, the UCAS process and the different institutions available for undergraduate study.  We believe every student who wants to go to university should be supported in achieving that ambition, with students being given many opportunities to broaden their experience of higher education throughout their time at the Academy.

Academic Progress

Student progress is monitored very closely at Walthamstow Academy Sixth Form to ensure that all students achieve their best. All students will receive an ALPS minimum target grade based on their GCSE examination performance. Throughout the year, this will be compared to teacher assessments and predicted grades. As a team, we ensure that we are able to support the students to reach their potential through the following methods:

  • One to one academic mentoring (form tutor and student)
  • Regular Pre Public examinations and data collection (Subject Teachers)
  • Widening Participation Schemes including mentoring and support from top Universities such as UCL and Kings College.
  • Progress meetings (Sixth form leadership team with parents and students)
  • Parental Engagement (through progress reports and parents evening)
  • PSHRE including study skills (during tutor time)
  • Growth mindset/ VESPA activities (during tutor time)

Robust support structures are put in place to ensure that students are making progress such as weekend and holiday intervention and this contributes to being rated in the top 10% of providers in the country for progress (ALPS 2016).
