The Inclusion department at Walthamstow Academy strives to ensure that every student with Special Educational Needs (SEN) reaches their full potential in school, and can make a successful transition to adulthood and the world of further and higher education, training or work.

We are a fully inclusive Academy who ensure all students are treated equally and educated in mainstream classrooms alongside their peers.

We pride ourselves on the facilities we have available ranging from Lexia intervention to a lift for the less mobile. A comprehensive toolkit is available to all staff so all staff know / understand how to support and where to gain further clarification when required.

The toolkit is re-published and explained at the beginning of each academic year to reflect our new intake and an electronic version is available to all staff at all times. A thorough transition from primary to secondary school is in place ensuring that previously identified needs are known about in a high level of detail with added screening to ‘spot’ potential needs that may not have been formally recognised by that stage.

There is a constant process of review of the SEN register in place with pastoral heads throughout the Academy again to ensure needs are catered for and new ones picked up at a very early stage. This process takes place termly.

Students with SEN can be identified on the SEN register which can be found on the J drive in the Inclusion folder and also via SIMS. The data indicates what the actual need is with strategies to support individuals.

Students are categorised: 

  • N = No special educational need
  • K = Support for students on Academy SEN register
  • E = Students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

Students categorized as K on SEN register require some additional intervention/educational support by the class teacher to help the student access the curriculum. Strategies are shared on the SEN register which is updated termly; co-planning sessions and through INSET on different groups.

Additionally students that are categorized as K may also have additional needs that need referral to an outside agency.   Students will receive in-Academy support by class teachers; key worker 1-2-1 sessions and (where appropriate), mentoring.

Students with an EHCP have an LSA (Learning Support Assistant) for their allocations – this is not always full time. Education, Health and Care Plans usually support a student’s needs as being to develop their literacy, numeracy and social skills. Hours allocated in the classroom usually reflect this. If a student has an EHCP it does not follow they will have an LSA in all lessons. A student with an EHCP will have support for up to the allocated hours specified on their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

An Education, Health and Care Plan student will have an IEP which staff are familiar with; follow the guidance provided and also are very much part of the review of targets – assessing progress towards targets throughout the year. All EHCP students and ‘high profile’ K students have a keyworker who they meet with on a 1-2-1 basis reviewing progress towards targets and setting new ones (where appropriate) in consultation with all subject teachers and Learning Managers. To ensure the optimum provision careful interventions are planned, for example: Literacy / numeracy intervention to improve literacy / numeracy skills, engagement in education, and self-esteem.
